History is the study and interpretation of the record of sophonts and their societies and civilizations. By definition events lacking a record are peripheral to historical studies (see Paleontology, Exopaleontology), even if they involve sophont life. Before the first contacts with To'ul'hs and other sophonts with a historical record, history reached only as far back as the beginning of the Agricultural Age on Old Earth. Terragen history therefore presently extends for more than fourteen thousand years, most of that being under the dominion of the Archailects.

Non-Terragen history extends back some hundreds of thousands of years in the case of species like the To'ul'hs, or for tens of millions of years in the case of such species as the Muuh. Because of difficulties involving fragmentary records and the interpretation of xenosophont languages and psychology, some Terragen experts have considered non-Terragen history to be a field within Xenology and do not regard it as history proper.

[1] Two or more geological periods. An era may be hundreds of millions of years in duration, and is defined by particular geological or biological processes.

Study of history and historical sociology that involves interactions between minds of different subjective time-rates
  • Historian - Text by M. Alan Kazlev
One who studies any aspect of history. Historians may belong to any race, clade, phyle or toposophic. Since the field of study is as vast as the mindkind emself, most historians specialise in specific areas of history.
  • Historians' Association (AI) - Text by M. Alan Kazlev
Biont term for an important association of Diamond Network 2nd singularity hyperturings, interested in archailectological history. Their findings are regularly posted on the Known Net, and are freely available to sophonts of any metaempire, provided they have the right translation software.
  • Historical Diaconcentrism - Text by M. Alan Kazlev
The tendency for the peripheral regions to be historically and technologically backward - "living fossils" - in relation to the inner sphere (owing to the amount of transit time - usually many centuries - required to get there). Moving from the core to the periphery is in a sense like moving back in time. This phenomenon breaks down as the outer volume worlds develop their own cultures and civilisations.
  • Historico-Sociomorphotypal Criticism - Text by M. Alan Kazlev
Social Science that deals with the understanding and analysis of the morphotypic, social, and cultural characteristics and evolution of a clade, culture, memeplex, or polity; used to distinguish the real meaning from the apparent and usually popular literal or superficial interpretation. An important element in historical and cliological reconstructions.
  • History - Text by M. Alan Kazlev
Study of the recorded past according to written or digital records and cliological simulation. Among the many subdivisions are ai, alternative, archailect, art, comparative, cyber, galactic, linguistic, memetic, military, political, religious, science, social, virtual, xenosophont, and consideration of specific historical periods, specific clades or cultures, specific worlds or solar systems, specific chronometrics (nanosecond-history, etc) and toposophic levels (e.g. history of 3rd singularity minds, etc).

  • Vanishment   - Text by Stephen Inniss
Complete erasure of an entity from history and common memory. Possible within a virch that has no external records, or wherever personal memories may be accessed and revised by some central body and external records are not present. It is commonly believed that in the Civilized Galaxy in the modern era cases are rare and voluntary, but this was not true in the past and is not true elsewhere. The true extent of this practice is not known since successful Vanishment does not leave any record of whoever or whatever was erased.
